The West Gate

Visby, Sweden

This gate is known as The West Gate and The Old Gate but its correct name is the Snäckgärds Gate. It belongs to one of the oldest sections of the Visby City Wall. It was named after the area outside the gate which was called Snäckgärdet. It was an important passage between the land used for cultivation on the outside and the settlement that existed on the townside of the wall. In the 19th century, the tower was converted into an outdoor café serving coffee, tea and punsch. Sadly, the drinks are not served any longer.
