This collapsed portion of the wall is known as the Lübeck Breach (Lübeckerbräschen in Swedish). It is believed that the wall was torn down during an attack by Lübeck in 1525. Which is probably true, as a number of arrowheads were found here during archaeological excavations. It is also known that large parts of Visby were burned down that year and churches and monasteries were looted.
Recent research however indicates that the wall may simply have collapsed. It was probably already weakened during the Middle Ages by external forces, devastating fires in the town, poor foundations or hostile attacks.
