The place where the Fish Oil Tower (Tranhustornet in Swedish) stands had been used for extracting oil from fish, hence the name. Same as many other ground towers, the Fish Oil Tower had 5 storeys and had no wall on the inside. The tower has not given its name to Tranhusgatan, as one might think. Tranhusgatan, which stretches from the northern part of S:t Hansgatan to Nordermur near the Fish Oil Tower, is named after a thatched house that was located where Tranhusgatan was later built.
To the east of the tower there is a stone house which is older than the city wall. The house, which is believed to have been a dwelling house or warehouse, had two rooms, one of which had a fireplace. Here, only the south side of the house has been saved as part of the wall, while the rest has been demolished. The saved house wall has since been reinforced so that it had roughly the same appearance as surrounding parts of the wall.
