The Small Beach Gate (Lilla Strandporten in Swedish) is one of the oldest gates in Visby City Wall. It was part of the first wall and was rebuilt during the 1200s. The gate was once almost two meters higher than what we see today. It was the most important passage in the early middle ages as it connected the old harbor (now the area of the Almedalen park) with the medieval market square, Rolandstorget, now known as Packhusplan. At one end of the square there was a monumental building known as The Wine House (Vinhuset) which served as the city's town hall, stock exchange and market hall. Today, only the foundations of this building remain. A number of warehouses have survived in full height, others have some storeys or vaulted cellars left of them.
