Visby City Wall had 22 saddle towers - towers that were erected between the ground towers and "hang" like a saddle over the wall. Now only 9 remain, including this one. This tower is the wall's oldest saddle tower and also the smallest.
It should have been called The Small Tower or something like that. But the tower's actual name is The Moat Tower (Vallgravstornet in Swedish) and it is associated with the moats outside the wall in Nordergravar. It was built in only two storeys, the outside is almost round and it is only five meters wide. The tower may have had a wooden superstructure. In general, the size of saddle towers increases the further east and south they are located. It provides evidence that the wall raising began in the northwest to continue east and then south.
