During renovation in one of the miners’ cottages in the 1950s an unusual discovery was made. 36 love letters were found, supposedly dated 1801-1802. It is believed that they belonged to Jonas Werner, a young lad employed by the owner of Utö, and Anna Christina Sandberg, a miner’s wife and a mother of three. Their letters are full of love, but also regret and worry and remorse. The relationship did not last. Anna Christina’s husband found out about his wife’s affair and confronted her. And Jonas had to leave the island anyway, as his employer sold Utö and transferred all of his people.
