Utö skjutfält is a military firing range which is used by the 1st Marine Regiment (Amf 1). The range was previously used for armored vehicles by the Södermanland Regiment (P 10) until it was disbanded in 2005.

Most of southern Utö has been a military firing range since the 1940s. It is one of Haninge's most rich natural areas, paradoxically  largely thanks to the firing range. Here many bird species have found a sanctuary and here you will find rare plants and insects that today have disappeared from large parts of the municipality.
