Utö Church is the archipelago's largest stone church built in 1850 out of stones that came directly from Utö mines. The mining company paid 5,000 Riksdaler Banco (Swedish currency at the time) and stood for the plot while the congregation contributed with 11,000 Riksdaler Banco.
Utö church had at least two predecessors. The oldest known was a wooden chapel, which was demolished in 1698. The following year a new chapel was erected which was called the Temple of the Holy Trinity. It was ravaged by the Russians in 1719 but repaired in 1727.
The church houses a unique grand organ from 1745 which originally stood in the Dutch Reformed Church in Stockholm. It is a popular place for weddings and baptisms. Behind the church by the water there is a beautiful memorial park where one can sit in peace and quiet and enjoy the view over Mysingen, an inland bay of the Baltic Sea.
