Iron ore was brought from the mines to the harbour by rail and loaded on ships for further transportation. Prior to loading, the arriving boats tipped their ballast into the harbour. As time went by, new islands emerged outside the harbour - Stora Persholmen and Barlastholmen (it means “The Ballast Isle” in Swedish) which are largely made up of the ballast stones.
