“The Beatles, pop group from Liverpool visiting Stockholm” on Sveriges Radio P1
On October 24th, 1963 at 17:00 The Beatles made their legendary recording for the Swedish Radio which turned out to be one of their best live recordings ever. They played seven songs: ”I Saw Her Standing There”, ”From Me to You”, ”Money (That's What I Want)”, “Roll Over Beethoven”, ”You've Really Got a Hold on Me”, ”She Loves You” and ”Twist and Shout”. This 25 minutes’ show was called by Rolling Stone “the best Beatles concert of all time”.
The show was recorded in Karlaplan Studio in front of the audience without rehearsal, and broadcasted on Radio P1 on the 11th of November, 1963 at 22:05.
The Beatles’ own instruments were late, so while on contract with Wox they had to use Fender equipment kindly offered by the Swedish musician Hasse Rosen who also participated in the show.
The Beatles popularity was only starting to rise. To attract the audience, 100 free tickets were announced, 250 people showed up and were present at the show. It was indeed more than twice as many as expected but just imagine what it would have been a couple of years later! Back in those days, The Beatles could even leave the Karlaplan Studios through the main entrance (there was no backstage exit anyway) and through the crowd to the car without any significant trouble.
Karlaplan Studio moved in 1967, and since 1971 the building has been occupied by Maxim Theater (Maximteatern).
