The Beatles in Gothenburg - Park Avenue Hotel

Kungsportsavenyen 36, 411 36 Göteborg, Sweden

After performing in Karlstad and Stockholm, The Beatles went to Gothenburg. There they stayed for one night (October 27th-28th) at Park Avenue Hotel in the city center.

The hotel is still there, now known as Elite Park Avenue Hotel. Founded in 1944, it has been a notable establishment in the city's history. At that time, there were many large industries in Gothenburg that needed hotel rooms for their foreign guests, clients and partners. With support from the City Council, several industrialists and shipowners gathered and decided to build a hotel with about 200 rooms (BTW, Sweden's first hotel with bathrooms and carpeted floors in all rooms) and a restaurant. A wise and timely decision, as once WWII was over the hotel had no shortage of guests.

Another famous name associated with the place is that of Evert Taube, a well-known Swedish author, artist, composer and singer. In 1958, he was commissioned to decorate the walls in the hotel’s large ballroom. He created 20 massive wall panels with motifs from his own poems. The work took two months during which Taube enjoyed living, eating and drinking at the hotel free of charge.

Besides The Beatles and Evert Taube, the hotel boasts having had Michael Jackson and George Bush on its guest list.
