Picasso Museum

Calle San Agustín, 8, Málaga, Spain

Pablo Picasso always wanted his work to be present in his hometown. His wish was fulfilled in 2003 with the opening of this museum. The museum’s collection contains more than 230 of his works, most of which were donated by the artist's daughter-in-law and grandson, Christine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso.

The museum is located in the Palace of the Counts of Buenavista (Palacio de Buenavista). It was built in the first half of the 16th century by Diego de Cazalla on the ruins of a Nasrid palace. Originally, it was the residence of the Counts of Buenavista de la Victoria, hence its name. The palace represents one the most important examples of civil architecture after the conquest of Malaga by the Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand during the Granada War, the last war of the Reconquista. The architectural style is basically that of the Renaissance, with a Plateresque facade and Mudéjar elements, possibly inherited from the previous Nasrid palace on the site. This combination was typical for the period following the completion of the Reconquista.
