One special church for the Picasso family

C. Granada, 78, Málaga, Spain

The Church of Santiago (La Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol) stands out for its beautiful baroque decorations and remarkable gold and silver work. It is the oldest Christian building in Málaga. It was built in 1490, on the ruins of an old mosque. The original central door in the Mudejar style used to be part of the original facade. The square tower, also in Mudejar style, was designed as a separate minaret and attached in the sixteenth century.

It is also known as the church in which Pablo Picasso was baptised on 10 November 1881 by the priest from the Iglesia de la Merced, José Fernández Quintero, and with the baptismal waters he was given the names Pablo Diego José y Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad. And not only that -  in this very church his parents got married. And his paternal grandparents, too.
