The twin-domed, scaly structures of the Esplanade opened in Marina Bay in 2002. The domes have been compared to lychees, papayas, and even copulating anteaters before finally being nicknamed "the durian". The triangular aluminum sunshades covering its two circular glass shell structures resemble spikes on two halves of a fruit. The design wasn't intended to mimic a durian; it evolved this way because the architects found it the most intriguing method for creating sunshades. They chose glass for its ability to offer stunning views from the Esplanade in all directions. However, given Singapore's proximity to the equator, the structure also needed effective protection from sunshine and heat radiation.

The concert hall is considered one of the best in the world for acoustics.
