Banksy’s Barking Dog

10 The Grange, London SE1 3AF, UK

Banksy’s “Choose Your Weapon” mural first appeared on a wall outside the Grange Pub in 2010. Shortly after, it was boarded over, and then reappeared framed and covered with perspex.

"Choose Your Weapon" is clearly a tribute to legendary artist Keith Haring’s “Barking Dog”.
Also referred to as CYW, this artwork by Banksy serves as a representation of disenchanted British youth and the culture of gangs with their aggressive dogs who have transformed into tools of power-seeking. The dog's simplistic artistic style further emphasizes a disconnect from the true capability of a weapon. The ominous demeanor of the hooded figure stands in stark contrast to his relaxed hands-in-the-pocket posture and the presence of his prominently barking cartoon dog. As portrayed in both the media of its time and Banksy's own interpretation, the dog has taken on an alternative role as a weapon within the streets of the UK.

“Choose Your Weapon” was released as a print in multiple colours in 2010.
