Kruthuset (also known as Kruthus Nr 2) is a former gunpowder and ammunition storage house located at Hundudden on Södra Djurgården. The location was of strategic importance as an outpost in the event of a hostile attack from the Baltic Sea. There used to be several gunpowder houses on the island, but only this one remained in its original shape and form.
It was built at the end of the 17th century for King Charles XI according to the drawings by the fortification architect Erik Dahlbergh. It is a stone house with a character: thick walls, high ceilings with beams, small windows with iron shutters and a strong iron door.
In the 1950s, the building was in severe decline. In the mid-1960s, it was restored and used as a clubhouse by the Vikings' Sailing Society (VSS) which has its marina next door. In the early 2000s, a small cafe was opened in the house called Kafé Kruthuset popular among boat owners, dog owners (furry friends are welcome here) and strollers. You can sit outside by the water and watch the boats and ferries pass by.
