Mirador de Agatha Christie

Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Mirador de La Paz is located on the edge of Martiánez cliffs and offers a great panoramic view of the new area of Puerto de la Cruz and, in particular, of the beach of Martiánez. It is claimed that this place was frequented by Agatha Christie during her stay in the town in 1927 and inspired her to write "The enigmatic Mr. Quinn".

The famous English writer came to the island during difficult times. Her mother had just died and her husband left her for another woman. Agatha became weak and could not face writing. To get away from it all she decided to take a trip to the Canary Islands with her twelve year old daughter Rosalind, and her secretary Charlotte Fischer. They stayed at the Hotel Taoro, practically the only hotel in the fishing town of Puerto de la Cruz at the time and the first Gran Hotel in Spain (https://reveal.world.story/1596).

She seemed to have found peace and tranquility here. During her stay, she finished two books of short stories : "The blue train" and "The enigmatic Mr. Quinn." The latter includes the story of "The man from the sea" in which he describes, with great clarity, some places in Puerto de la Cruz (the Cliff of Martianez, Casa Cologan and the Sitio Litre Garden) but without explicitly referring to the island.

In memory of Agatha Christie’s visit, there is a bust of her in the square behind Mirador de La Paz.

The stairs that lead to it are colorfully painted and carry the titles of her books.
