The Zum Franziskaner is one of the oldest restaurants in Stockholm. It was founded by Mrs. Augusta Engelbrecht on December 23rd 1889.
There have been claims that Zum Franziskaner was founded in 1421 when King Erik of Pomerania allowed the monks to charge for food and drink. However, this is most likely a myth and recent research does not support these claims.

Years went by and the old 1700-century building was torn down and a new one, drawn by Fredrik Dalberg, was built by Carl Smith. It was completed in 1910 and Zum Franziskaner moved back in. Parts of the old interior were preserved which makes it unique and definitely contributes to the atmosphere. The classic beer hall with the old Art Nouveau interior is one of a kind!
