Once a bakery from the 1800s and now a pub and restaurant, this quaint Irish joint is the only Irish-owned pub in Stockholm and is a popular haunt for local anglophiles. Wirströms was established in 1901 and is one of the oldest pubs in Stockholm. The basement has several rooms, which were originally used for storage and other practical purposes related to the building's original function. The pub was originally named "Trocadero" but was later renamed to "Wirströms" after the owner, Carl Wirström.
During the early 20th century, some of the basement rooms were used as a temporary morgue for victims of a fire that occurred in the building next door. In the 1960s, the basement was converted into a dance hall, which became a popular venue for live music and events.
Today, the basement of Wirströms pub is still used as a venue for live music, comedy shows, and other events. The rooms have been renovated and updated to accommodate modern equipment and technology while preserving the historic character of the building.
The pub is known for its wide selection of beers, including many Swedish craft beers. They also offer traditional Swedish food such as meatballs and pickled herring.
Wirströms pub has a strong association with the literary scene in Stockholm. Many famous Swedish authors and poets, including August Strindberg and Pär Lagerkvist, were regulars at the pub.
Wirströms pub has been featured in several movies and TV shows, including the Swedish movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Män som hatar kvinnor). It is featured prominently in several episodes of the famous Swedish TV series "Beck". For example, in the episode "The Monster", the pub serves as the site of a pivotal scene where the detectives meet with a suspect. The episode "The Levantine Gamble" also features Wirströms pub as a key location, where the detectives investigate a murder that occurs on the premises.
In 2016, Wirströms pub was named the best pub in Stockholm by the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.
