During the Cold War Sweden wanted to make sure that their jet fighters will be fuelled and serviced not only at their bases, but all across the country. The decision was made to create backup runways out of the ordinary roads, in close vicinity of the bases. You may drive an ordinary 2-lane winding country road and then find yourself on a 2 km straight, concrete-paved, 4-lane road, which then turns into an ordinary country road again. These are, in fact, fighter jet runways.
