Town’s creepiest alley

C. Mesón, 9, Cádiz, Spain

This alley holds the distinction of being the narrowest street in Cadiz, and its existence came to light during the restoration of the surrounding buildings. One end of the street has been enclosed by a wall, while the opposite side is secured with a permanently locked gate to preserve the site.

Despite its slender dimensions, this street is steeped in legends. One such tale recounts a romantic episode from the time of Napoleon's invasion. A French captain, deeply enamoured with a local girl from Cadiz, became entangled in a love story. The girl, in an attempt to liberate her sweetheart from the enemy, feigned compliance. However, the plan took an unexpected turn, and she found herself falling for the Frenchman. The "forbidden" couple supposedly sought refuge in this narrow street, engaging in passionate rendezvous. Tragically, their love story concluded with capture and a death sentence. According to the locals of Callejón del Duende, every year on the Day of the Dead, the moans of the ill-fated couple can be heard.

El Duende, a moniker associated with an infamous smuggler in Cadiz, adds another layer to the street's history. Legend has it that this character carried out clandestine activities in the city's narrow lanes, potentially giving the street its name.

Today, Callejón del Duende is adorned with gnomes and spiritual creatures, including plastic snakes, while potted plants and statues contribute to the street's vibrant atmosphere.

For those seeking a touch of good fortune, tradition suggests tossing a coin into Callejón del Duende. Perhaps worth a try to test your luck!
