The cradle of the Spanish constitution

C. San José, 36, Cádiz, Spain

The Oratory of San Felipe Neri was built in Baroque style between the years 1685 and 1719. Ruined by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 , whose effects reached here, the double- span dome with eight windows, would be rebuilt shortly after, in 1764, by the master Pedro Afanador .

It was in this place where the meetings of the Cortes Generales took place starting in 1810 during the Napoleonic invasion of Spain and where the first Spanish constitution was proclaimed, the Constitution of 1812.

The Political Constitution of the Spanish Monarchy , better known as the Spanish Constitution of 1812 or the Constitution of Cádiz, was promulgated by the Spanish Cortes Generales , made up of deputies from America, Asia, Africa and Peninsula , extraordinary meetings in Cádiz on March 19, 1812. It has been given great historical importance as it was the first Constitution promulgated in Spain, in addition to being one of the most liberal of its time.
