Quarries and bunkers

Bungenäs, Fårösund, Sweden

About a century ago Bungenäs peninsular was Gotland's center for the limestone industry, and the island’s largest limestone quarry was situated here. The quarry was closed down in 1963. The military took over the area and turned it into the training grounds for Swedish Navy coastal artillery regiment.

Today, the area is a curious combination of  industrial and military heritage. Deep limestone quarries, hundreds of covered bunkers, rock chambers, grenade craters, half-demolished loading docks, flattened shorelines and a number of buildings from different eras. Among other things, the old Consumer Store, the manager's villa, the workers' dining hall, the high ovens and remnants of the old unloading piers. All in a stunning setting by the seaside.
