Up on a hilltop above Visby, visible from the town and the sea, stands a gallows. It was built during the 13th century, and was in use for 600 years. The low, circular stone wall with three stone pillars is very well preserved. Missing are only the wooden beams which rested on the pillars and to which the hooks and ropes were connected. The place will almost certainly give you goosebumps when you think about the bodies hanging there, seen from everywhere and warning the locals and visitors coming from the sea about the consequences of breaking the law.
In July 2008, in close proximity to the gallows, archaeologists from the Gotland Museum found the bones of 30 people who had been executed, presumably on the spot.
