20 Avenue Rachel, 75018 Paris
Below the street level underneath the busy Rue Caulaincourt and under the iron bridge lies this most secret Parisian cemetery. It was opened in 1825, on the site of an abandoned lime quarry that had been used as a mass grave during the Revolution. Many famous artists who worked and lived on Montmartre found their final home here. Painter Edgar Degas, architect August Monferran, writers Marie-Henri Beyle (aka Stendhal), Alexander Dumas, Emile Zola and Heinrich Heine, composer Berlioz, inventor of the saxophone Adolphe Sax, and singer Dalida are all buried in the cemetery.
