Farewell Sweden

Fullerstakvarnsvägen, Huddinge, Sweden

Look for an inscription on a granite rock, just by the ruins of the Fullersta Mill.

Now barely visible, the inscription on the stone tells a touching story from the days when Sweden had difficult times - second half of the 19th century. The inscription was made by Johan August Andersson in 1872, the year he received the visa and left for the United States. It says "Farewell, you beloved Homeland, 1872, August (in runes)", he was 22 years old when he wrote it.

Many Swedes immigrated during that time,  the Swedish economy had major trouble then. August ended up in Cannon City, Fremont, Colorado, where he mainly grew fruit trees. He never married, didn't have any children and never returned to his beloved Sweden.

Also, check out the ruins of a mill just across the path from the stone - the dam had replaced the mill itself, but the foundation is clearly visible. It was in use from 1689 up to about the time when the inscription was made.
