Gerells exchange office murder

Malmtorgsgatan 2, 111 51 Stockholm, Sweden

On January 5, 1910 between 9 and 10 o'clock in the morning two men entered the Gerells currency exchange office in central Stockholm. They were delivering coal to Hotel Rudeberg and came in to ask for directions. Inside the office they found a young girl in a pool of blood, and cash bills spread on the desk and floor. They called for police. The girl - 25 years old cashier Victoria Hellsten  - was still alive when they arrived but died shortly after. The thief must have seen her open the safe through the window, came in, smashed her head with a heavy object, grabbed the money (in total, about 6,000 SEK in different currencies) and fled.

The news of a young girl murdered in the heart of the city in broad daylight spread quickly. The police received a lot of tips. One of them turned out to be very helpful. Richard Larsson from Hotel Temperance called about one of the hotel guests - J A Andersson. He was seen leaving the hotel at 08.30 in the morning, came back at 11.30 and behaved very suspiciously. He checked out around 15.00 and left a bag that he promised to pick up the following day.

A couple of detectives went to the Hotel Temperance. In the bag they found money stolen from the exchange office, some banknotes were covered with blood. Quite conveniently they also found a photograph and a document in the name of Johan Alfred Andersson Ander.

The guest mentioned to the hotel staff that he was heading for Vaxholm. The police found out that Alfred’s father had a cabin in Karlsudd near Vaxholm. This is where he got arrested just before midnight on the very same day.

Ander was sentenced to death on May 14, 1910 by Stockholm City Hall, and Svea High Court upheld the judgment on July 1. The killer awaited for his sentence at Långholmen prison (https://reveal.world/story/1237 ) where he behaved impeccably. After the High Court's ruling, Ander sent a letter to the King of Sweden declaring himself innocent of the robbery and murder, and asking to withdraw the sentence and free him.  Gustaf V rejected his request. Johan Ander was executed on November 23, 1910 at 8:00 am at Långholmen's prison yard. It was the last execution in Sweden and it happened to be the one and only time a guillotine was used (https://reveal.world/story/1385 )
