Tatooine – A New Hope

Death Valley, CA, USA

While much of Tatooine was filmed in Tunisia, certain desert scenes in A New Hope were shot in Death Valley, California. The arid, rocky terrain of this national park provided the perfect setting for some of Luke Skywalker’s early adventures on his home planet.

Notable filming spots include Dante’s View, which was used for a panoramic shot of Mos Eisley spaceport, and Golden Canyon, where R2-D2 was seen rolling through the sand before being captured by Jawas. The scorching temperatures and rugged landscape made Death Valley an ideal stand-in for the desolate world of Tatooine.
