Los Roques: stones telling the past

Mirador Playa Los Roques, Los Realejos, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

This spot allows you to travel back in time. A reminder of what the north coast of Tenerife must have looked like when the palm trees, dragon trees and Canary Island spurges were what formed the silhouettes on the horizon.

Every rock here can tell you a story. The dark basalt rocks on the shoreline are the products of recent volcanoes in the Orotava valley. Pale pumice stone - from early explosive eruptions. You can also see remnants of the landslides that shaped the valley. The offshore rocks bear witness to the outer limits of the island in the past. The former coastline was behind them.
