Storhamn

Landsort, Nynäshamn, Sweden

The village of two ports
Storhamn (meaning “big port” in Swedish) has been the island’s main settlement since the mid 19th century when maritime pilots started moving here from the northern part of the island (https://reveal.world/story/1438)

At Storhamn, there are two natural harbors: one on the eastern side and one on the western side. In 1883 a railroad was built between them which made it possible to move the boats between the ports to protect them from the storms. Storm moorings were built on the eastern side, but despite this in 1916 a pilot boat crushed against the rocks during a storm. Modern breakwaters have later been constructed on the western side allowing the port to function regardless of the weather.

The village is situated between the two ports. There are older timber cottages and a variety of bridges, outbuildings and sheds. Modern houses can be found to the south of the village center.

The western port (Västerhamn) is mostly used by pilot boats as well as vessels based at Landsort. The eastern port (Östershamn) is mainly for pleasure boats.
