The Málaga–Almería road massacre

N-340, 29787 Nerja, Málaga, Spain

This bridge over Maro ravine was built in 1888 and today belongs to the abandoned section of the N-340 road. In February 1937 this idyllic place witnessed the passing of thousands of women, men and children who had left Malaga fleeing from the fascist troops that were taking over the city and, pursued by them, headed to Almería in a desperate attempt to save their lives and preserve freedom. The gigantic human column of between 100,000 and 150,000 people was machine-gunned from the air by aviation and cannonaded from the sea by warships. It has become known as 'La Desbandá', an episode of death and suffering for the civilian population and a drama silenced for decades.

In 2012 this bridge was declared a Place of Historical Memory of Andalusia to mark the historical and symbolic value of the road through which the exodus took place in 1937.
