The Toll Gate (Svartbäckstullen)

Svartbäcksgatan, Uppsala, Sweden

In the latter half of the 17th century, there was a toll gate here. It  consisted of a high wooden construction with double doors crowned by a three-sided top piece with a royal name cipher. The customs gate would be kept closed at night and opened early in the morning. In its vicinity, there was a  customs house - a simpler wooden building where the customs officer had his service room and residence. This was replaced by a new one in 1706. In 1811 the customs regulation ceased, after which the customs gate was demolished. The Customs House was first demolished in 1901.

Carl von Linnaeus started with his students from this city customs when they were going on an excursion to Old Uppsala, Herbatio Upsaliae antiquae, to study among other things marsh plants at Vittulsberg.
