Reminder of the sea (Fyrishov)

Fyrishof, Uppsala, Sweden

The mud beneath your feet is a reminder of the sea. Today, the seashore is almost 100 km further east and if you hear the sound of waves, it's probably coming from Fyrishov, a traditional bathing area.

In Uppland, there was previously plenty of brickwork thanks to the clay in the Uppsala plain. After the ice sheet melted away, Uppsala was the seabed. In a calm sea, the small clay grains slowly and infinitely slowed down, forming the thick clay layers that are the Uppsala plain. The clay was broken into covers and dried in molds. Finally, it was burned to brick in an oven. Of this, the entire Uppsala cathedral was built.
