On the 8th of August 1993 a new Saab fighter jet JAS 39A Gripen (“Griffin”) crashed on the island of Långholmen during the Stockholm Water Festival. Tens of thousands of spectators were watching the show. Miraculously, only one person on the ground was injured. The pilot ejected from the aircraft and landed safely with parachute, although he got stuck in a tree. The crash spot is now marked by a stainless steel sculpture.
This was not the first accident with a Gripen. Four years earlier the jet prototype crashed in Linköping during public display. The incident was filmed by the Swedish Television news crew and led to calls from critics of the project to cancel the development of Gripen. The 1993 crash led to further negative media coverage. It was later identified that both crashes were caused by the same flight control software malfunction which was corrected in 1995.
The development has not been cancelled and as of 2020, more than 270 Gripens of all models (A-F) have been built. Besides the Swedish Air Force, they are in service in Brazil, Czech Republic, Hungary, South Africa, Thailand and the UK.
