The Zone at Jägala River

Jägala-Joa HPP, River Jägala, Estonia

Here, on Jägala river Andrey Tarkovsky filmed the Zone for Stalker. Here, in the ruins of Jägala-Joa hydropower plant the mythical “wish-granting room” was located. Jägala-Joa hydropower plant was partially blown up during the Second World War by the retreating Red Army – a terribly sad story which created a perfect setting for the sci-fi movie. Since then, the building has undergone extensive renovations and now is in operation again so visits inside are not possible. Still, the Stalker fans will recognise the doorway and flat-roofed wings.

Bonus fact: in 1987 another sci-fi movie was filmed here - The End of Eternity, based on the book by Issak Asimov.
