Haga Manor was featured as Maria’s house in The Sacrifice, the last work of Andrei Tarkovsky. It was here that all filming of The Sacrifice started with the scenes of Alexander’s dream and bare feet of a child walking in the snow.
It was a cold April day. Tarkovsky went outside and started to scatter old newspapers, photographs, and coins into a puddle. The crew asked what all this was supposed to symbolize. "How should I know?” Tarkovsky answered, “This is the fabric of a dream…”
Haga Manor was abandoned at the time. This how a member of the filming crew described the place: “Haga Manor outside Enköping sounds impressive indeed! Nothing could be less impressive than the sight that greets us after an hour's ride in minivans. Dilapidated roofs, broken windows, rude graffiti scrawled on walls, stuccowork, and across coats of arms. Tarkovsky darts about, seemingly pleased in the midst of this misery of caved-in plaster ceilings and damp limestone floors.”
Today, Haga Manor looks as impressive as it sounds and houses a beautiful hotel and a conference center.
