Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant is very similar to the infamous Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in both reactor design and lack of a robust containment building. Due to these dangerous similarities, Lithuania had to close the plant as part of its accession agreement to the European Union. Due to these similarities and because of its decommissioning, this power plant served as a perfect setting for the HBO Chernobyl series. Everything was filmed here: the exterior, the surroundings, firefighters, divers, the arrival of miners.
The nearby Visaginas Control Panel Simulator originally served as a training facility for the staff of the power plant, including preparation for emergency situations. HBO’s team used the simulator as a model for the Chernobyl reactor block 4 set.
Today, you can visit Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant but you need to book the tour well in advance.
