King Karl XII (1682-1718) was very fond of animals. When he was on horseback during his military campaigns in Europe, he always had dogs by his side, such as Caesar, Snushane, Turk. And his favourites were named Pompe. The name may evoke thoughts of the Roman general Pompey. The first Pompe died at Karlberg in 1699 and is buried here in the park.. During a campaign in Poland in 1703, Pompe the second died. There was Pompe number 3 who died in Hungary during the King’s 14-days’ journey from Bender in Turkey to Lund in Sweden in 1714.
