Dominican herb garden

Olofsgatan 4, 193 30 Sigtuna, Sweden

During the Middle Ages, scholarly brothers, sisters, monks and nuns from Europe came to monasteries and conventions founded in the Nordic countries. With them they brought great knowledge of small and big things. They wrote in Latin letters on paper, they wrote and printed books. In addition, they had knowledge of agriculture and cultivation from the monastery gardens, where they grew both vegetables and fruits. The herb gardens, where herbs and medicinal plants were grown, were also very important. The Dominican order that came to Sigtuna was a so-called preaching order. The brothers did not seek solitude, but went out and preached to people. It was important not only to take care of "their own", but also the people in the surroundings. Therefore, there were both guesthouses and hospitals here. And you can imagine that the herb garden that was here was large and showy. The small herb garden we can see today is run by Örtagården's friends, who celebrate and are inspired by the knowledge and good deeds of the Dominicans.
