The Amazing Poets’ Garden

The Garden of the Andalusian Poets, Av. Mar y Sierra, Estepona, Málaga, Spain

The Andalucian Poets' Garden in Estepona presents a captivating and intriguing concept. Known as Jardin de los Poetas Andaluces or Pasaje Poetas Andaluces, the garden may initially deceive a casual passerby strolling down Calle Jesús Cautivo. Glancing into the garden, one might momentarily feel transported to the Middle Ages or a Game of Thrones set, where the heads of criminals are impaled on stakes. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Established in April 2017, the garden emerged following the demolition of a dilapidated building, creating a passage that conveniently connects Calle Jesús Cautivo with Plaza Mario Vargas Llosa.

Within the garden, twelve bronze busts are strategically mounted at head height on marble pillars, all crafted by the talented artist Elena Lunas. Notably, one of the featured poets, Carlos Murciano, was present at the garden's opening ceremony.

The bronze representations pay homage to poets such as Carlos Murciano, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Vicente Alexandre, Luis Cernuda, Luis Rosales, Leopoldo de Luís, Rafael Montesinos, Francisco Garfias, Alfonso Canales, Luis Jiménez Martos, Fernando Quiñones, and Antonio Hernández.

Adding another layer of literary richness, a ceramic on the wall encapsulates the words of Juan Ramón Jiménez, a Nobel Prize winner in literature. This particular ceramic has been generously sponsored by Carlos Murciano, a poet featured in the garden. Murciano himself earned the prestigious Premio Nacional de Poesía (Spanish National Poetry Prize) in 1970 and the Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil (Spanish National Children's Literature Prize) in 1982.
