The Amazing Iron Church

Pl. San Francisco, 1, Estepona, Málaga, Spain

In the 18th century, the town was prepared for its second religious structure, the Franciscan monastery, initially known as the hermitage of Vera Cruz. Positioned just under a hundred meters north of the clock tower, this hermitage evolved into a hospice. Eventually, at the beginning of the 19th century, it transformed into the church of Our Lady of Remedies (Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios), exhibiting a fascinating blend of architectural styles described as American colonial and rococo.

The church is uniquely charming and unconventional, particularly notable for its hexagonal steeple adorned with blue and white tiles.

It was constructed from the local iron-rich sandstone, and if you go around the church and look carefully, you can see remnants of hematite, iron ore, still embedded in the stone.
