La Torrecilla watchtower

Playa la Torrecilla, Nerja, Spain

This lovely ruin may look like a part of a fortress or a castle, but it was in fact only a watchtower, known as Atalaya de la Torrecilla (meaning the Torrecilla Watchtower in Spanish). It was built in the 16th century during the reign of King Philip II of Spain as part of a network of watchtowers along the Mediterranean coast to defend against pirate attacks.

The tower was strategically placed on a hill overlooking the coastline, providing a clear view of any approaching ships. It was also used as a signalling station to communicate with other towers along the coast. The tower was cylindrical in shape and made of stone and mortar, with a height of 11 metres and a diameter of 7.5 metres.

During the 19th century, the tower fell into disrepair and was abandoned. Today, the tower serves as a reminder of Spain's rich history and the important role that these watchtowers played in protecting the country's coast from invaders. It is also a spectacular viewpoint!
