The origins of Ermita de la Santa Cruz, or Chapel of the Holy Cross, date back to 1664 when religious authorities sought permission to construct a new conventual temple in the Barrio de la Santa Cruz in La Antigua Guatemala.
The chapel’s façade showcases a stucco crucifix adorned with images of the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and various saints. This historic façade, the sole surviving element of the original structure, also features a niche window, sunken tympanums, octagonal openings, and discontinuous cornices.
The chapel endured significant damage from the earthquakes of 1717, prompting the local community to contribute to its restoration. However, subsequent quakes in 1773 and 1942 inflicted further damage, leaving only the façade intact.
Since 1973, this resilient façade has served as the backdrop for an enchanting open-air theater and musical stage. A special underground chamber accommodates the orchestra, and during performances, singers sometimes ascend to the roof, creating a unique and captivating spectacle.
