Frescoes of the Mondejar House

C. Mondéjar, 27, Estepona, Málaga, Spain

This mural painting, dating back to the 18th century, graces the walls of a historic residence.  The mural was discovered in 2019 and carefully restored by the City Council in collaboration with the current owners of this property. Why had it been hidden from our eyes for many years?  According to archaeologists, these murals were covered with lime for health reasons. The rulers of the time used to order the whitening of facades with lime to prevent epidemics such as typhus or yellow fever from spreading.

Displaying Baroque aesthetics, the mural features a captivating blend of geometric, zoomorphic, anthropomorphic, and plant motifs, The drawings also contain such unique Indian motifs as a caryatid and a black-skinned Atlantean, or a bird resting on a balcony painted on the façade.
