Rotermanni 2, 10111 Tallinn, Estonia
Named after the famous entrepreneur Rotermann, this area once was the centre of Tallinn. Strategically located near the seaport and three main roads, it was popular among merchants and industrialists. It housed a distillery, several factories and warehouses and Tallinn’s largest mill. Today it combines old and new architecture, and is a popular recreational area with fashion shops, trendy cafes and bars. One of its main streets is named in memory of Tarkovsky’s film - the Stalker’s Path (Stalkeri käik). In 1979 when Tarkovsky filmed here, the area was abandoned and looked like a perfect setting for post-apocalyptic world. In the movie, the Stalker, the Writer and the Professor are driving towards the entrance of the Zone and jump out of their jeep into this street to hide when they hear the sound of guard’s motorbike.
